Which phones support an eSIM?

Every iPhone from the iPhone XS and XR onwards (up to the iPhone 18 Pro and 17e), every Google Pixel from the Pixel 3 onwards (up to the Pixel 11 series), and Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, including every Z Fold and Z Flip. Many recent OnePlus, Xiaomi, Oppo, Honor, Motorola, Sony, Nothing and Huawei handsets support it too, as do Wi-Fi + Cellular iPads and Windows laptops with mobile data. Smartwatches cannot take a travel eSIM.

How do I check whether my phone supports an eSIM?

On an iPhone open Settings, Mobile Data, and look for "Add eSIM" or "Add Data Plan". On Android open Settings, Network and internet, SIMs, and look for the option to add an eSIM or download a SIM. If the option is there, the phone supports it. Dialling *#06# also shows an EID number on an eSIM-capable device.

Does my phone need to be unlocked to use a travel eSIM?

Yes. A phone locked to one carrier cannot install another operator profile, so ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel.

Access the app you normally use to make calls.
Dial *#06#

Enter this code exactly as shown — no internet required.
Look for "EID"

If you see a 32-digit EID number, your device supports eSIM. If the EID doesn't appear, check your phone settings or the manufacturer's site.

Or look in Settings

iPhone: Settings → Mobile Data → Add eSIM. Android: Settings → Network & internet → SIMs → Add eSIM (Samsung: Connections → SIM manager). If the option is there, your phone supports eSIM.

Your phone must be unlocked

A phone locked to one carrier can't use another network's eSIM. If you bought it on a contract, ask your carrier to unlock it before you travel.
